Riggs, Squaires and Matter Sweep America East Weekly Awards

BOSTON -- After a 6-0 week, the UMBC Softball team swept America East Weekly Honors. Emily Riggs was named Player of the Week, Ella Squaires earned Rookie of the Week, and Kya Matter got the nod as Pitcher of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Riggs slashed .588/1.235/1.917 with three HR, 13 RBI, two doubles, and six runs scored. She went 10-for-17 at the plate with only one strikeout., and also was perfect in the field with 8 putouts. Had the game-winning walk-off homer in the 9th on Sunday against Maine.

Squaires batted .588 (10-for-17) with two RBI, 10 runs scored and eight walks in six games batting leadoff. The freshman had a .720 OBP and went 6-for--6 on stolen base attempts.

Matter went 4-0 on the week with 31 strikeouts, five walks, 12 hits and just three earned runs in 23 innings pitched over four appearances, with three starts. The junior went 2-0 against Maine, striking out 21. In the series finale she struck out 14, walked 2, allowed 1 earned run in 9 innings of work.

The Retrievers hit the road for a three game series at Binghamton beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday.
