Grace Bruce scored six goals as the UMBC Women's Lacrosse team led wire-to-wire in a 13-8 win over visiting New Hampshire on Friday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
Katana Nelson tallied three goals,Â
Kolby Weedon had two andÂ
Lauryn Warfield and
Ria Lagdameo each added a goal in the victory.
Mary Ellis had two assists, and goalie
Isabella Fontana made seven saves for the Retrievers who improved to 6-4 and 1-1 in the America East.
Weedon had seven draw controls, while
Ella Killian had six.
Kennedy Evans had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Avery Corino also had two caused turnovers in the contest.
How it Happened:
- Bruce opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 2:57 in, and then Nelson followed only 36 seconds later to make it 2-0
- The two then went back to back less than three minutes later as Bruce scored with 7:44 left and Nelson tallied 33 seconds after.
- Warfield scored an acrobatic goal, shooting it in off a rebound while falling backwards, and Bruce completed her hat trick with two minutes on the dot left.
- UMBC took a 6-0 lead into the second after winning all seven draws in the period and outshooting UNH 12-2
- After the Wildcats scored the first two goals of the second, Weedon, Nelson and Lagdemo each scored in a late 2:28 span to send the Dawgs into the half up 9-2
- UMBC won the draw battle, 12-1, in the first half while outshooting the visitors 20-7
- Bruce scored the only two goals in the third to make it an 11-2 contest heading into the final frame
- Weedon put UMBC up 10 just 40 seconds into the quarter, but UNH finally stopped the run a little under four minutes later.
- Bruce scored the final goal for the Retrieverswith 7:13 left to make it 13-3
- The Wildcats scored the final five goals of the game to account for the final score
UMBC continues America East play at UMass Lowell next Saturday at 4 p.m.
