Offense Continues Tear as Baseball Defeats Delaware State, 13-7, on Wednesday

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Baseball team scored double-digit runs for the third consecutive game en route to a 13-7 win over visiting Delaware State on Wednesday afternoon.

Six different Retrievers drove in a run, while Eddie Sargent came on in relief and worked 5.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win as UMBC rallied from an early 5-0 deficit

How it Happened:
  • Delaware State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, and the lead grew to 5-0 in the second.
  • Sargent then entered with two outs and a runner at second in the second, and got out of the jam
  • UMBC quickly trimmed the lead in the bottom of the second
  • Luke Trythall hit a leadoff single, Matthew Best was hit by a pitch and Dawson Baracni walked to load the bases with no outs
  • Kyle Eddington drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Danny Wyatt followed with a three run homer, the first of his career, to make it just a 5-4 DSU lead.
  • Wyatt would tie the game in the fourth on an RBI single to center field to score Best, followed by a sac fly from Jayden Shertel to score Baracani and give the Retrievers a 6-5 lead.
  • In the fifth, Baracani singled home Matt Ryan to make it 7-5
  • The lead grew to 8-5 in the seventh on an Eddington RBI single
  • UMBC busted the game open in the bottom of the eighth with five runs
  • Trythall drove in a pair with a double, and Best followed him with a three run homer to make it 13-5
  • Delaware State would get a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but would get no closer

The Retrievers will start America East Conference play on Friday at Alumni Field with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Binghamton. Game one will be a seven inning contest, followed by a nine inning game two. Game three is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
