Evix Leads the Way as Softball Defeats Wisconsin Again

BALTIMORE -- Lyndsey Evix homered and drove in three runs as the UMBC Softball team completed a two-game sweep of Big Ten foe Wisconsin with a 7-5 victory on Sunday at The Diamond.

Amaya Carroll also homered, while Ashley Della Guardia drove in a pair and Emily Riggs had two hits and an RBI.

Kya Matter picked up the save after working a scoreless final 2.2 innings. Jerzie Nutile came on in relief and struck out two in 2.1 innings to earn her third win of the season.

How it Happened:
  • Maggie Frisvold worked out of a jam in the first, striking out the final two batters to strand a pair
  • Ella Squaires beat out an infield single to leadoff the first, moved to second on a Carroll sacrifice bunt and scored on a Riggs RBI single.
  • Nutile reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second a wild pitch and scored on a two out RBI single from Evix
  • The Badgers scored two in the second, and then went up 3-2 in the third, UMBC responded in a big way in the bottom half of the third
  • Carroll tied it right away with a leadoff homer, Riggs then singled and moved to third when Nutile reached on an error
  • Della Guardia then brought both home with a two-RBI double to make it 5-3
  • Evix then followed with a two-run blast to make it 7-3
  • Wisconsin cut the lead to 7-5 in the fifth, and in the sixth attempted to score on fly out to right, but Macy Granzow threw out the runner at home
  • Matter worked around a leadoff double in the seventh to earn her second save of the season
The Retrievers host Hofstra on Tuesday at 1 p.m., followed by a home doubleheader on Wednesday against Coppin State
