BALTIMORE -- Jerzie Nutle went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, while also striking out seven in six innings of work in the circle as the UMBC Softball team defeated defending CAA champion Hofstra via run-rule, 10-2, in six innings on Tuesday afternoon at The Diamond.
Nutile doubled twice and score a pair of runs at the plate, and also allowed just four hits, one earned run and one walk in the circle, to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Reigning America East Player of the Week
Ashley Della Guardia continued her torrid play at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while
Emily Riggs and
Lyndsey Evix both homered for the Retrievers.
Ella Squaires went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot
How it Happened:
- In the first, Squaires and Nutile each singled to put runners on the corners for Della Guardia, who promptly brought both home with a double off the wall in center.
- Evix then immediately followed with a two run homer to left field to make it 4-0 in the first
- The Pride got a pair of two out hits to cut the lead to 4-1 in the second, but UMBC quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning
- Jolie Torrens singled to lead off the inning, Squaires singled with one out and both moved into scoring position on a ground out
- Riggs then blasted the first pitch she saw well over the fence in left for a three-run homer that made it 7-1
- Nutile then doubled, and, after a pitching change, Della Guardia singled her home to make it 8-1
- A pair of UMBC errors allowed Hofstra to get an unearned run back in the top of the third, and it remained 8-2 until the bottom of the sixth
- Squaires and Carroll hit back-to-back singles to start the sixth, and with one out, Nutile ended the game with a two-run double
