Softball Rallies Twice Before Dropping Pair

The UMBC Softball team overcame multi-run deficits in both games on SATURDAY, but ultimately dropped both.

The Retrievers fell to Colgate. 5-2, in eight innings, before dropping a 9-6 game to Niagara in the night cap

Game 1:
  • A bunt single and a homer had Niagara up 2-0 in the first, and it remained that way until the sixth, when Ashley Della Guardia hit a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the sixth
  • With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jerzie Nutile doubled and would score when Macy Granzow slapped a double down the line in left.
  • The Raiders would score three (only one earned) in the top of the eighth to secure the victory
Game 2:
  • Niagara jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning
  • The Retrievers responded with three In the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Della Guardia and a two-run double from Nutile
  • The Purple Eagles scored one in the top of the second, but UMBC took a 6-5 lead after Meghan Shirey hit a leadoff double and scored on a Granzow triple, Granzow scored on an error and then Amaya Carroll drove in Ella Squaires with a triple
  • It remained 6-5 until the sixth when Niagara put up four runs (two earned)
The Retrievers close out the UMBC Spring Invite on Sunday with a 10 am game against Wisconsin
