Softball Knocks Off Big Ten's Wisconsin, 4-3, on Friday

BALTIMORE -- Ashley Della Guardia hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to lift the UMBC Softball team to a thrilling 4-3 win over Big Ten foe Wisconsin on Friday afternoon at The Diamond.

Kya Matter went the distance, while striking out six, to pick up the victory in the circle.

How it Happened:
  • Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the third on a solo homer, but UMBC would respond in the bottom of the fourth
  • Amya Lundy reached on an error to start the inning, and then moved to second on an Amaya Carroll single
  • Emily Riggs brought both home with a double to center to give the Retrievers a 2-1 lead
  • UMBC would add a third when pinch runner Jaedyn McKeon scored on a Lyndsey Evix sacrifice fly to make it 3-1
  • The lead would be short lived, however, as the Badgers tied it up on three bloop hits to shallow left in the top of the fifth
  • Carroll hit a leadoff single in the sixth and moved to third on an error
  • Della Guardia would then put the Retrievers ahead for good with her single to right field
  • Matter struck out the first two in the seventh, and after a single, got a fly out to end the game
Carroll went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Evix and Granzow also had hits for UMBC

The Retrievers will face Colgate and Niagara tomorrow night beginning at 5 p.m.
