BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Softball team returned home for the first time in nearly a month and blasted five home runs en route to an 11-3 win in five innings over visiting Niagara on Thursday night at The Diamond
Jerzie Nutile,
Amaya Carroll,
Emily Riggs,
Macy Granzow and
Ashley Della Guardia all homered for the Retrievers.
Nutile also earned the win in the circle after striking out four and allowing just two hits in three innings of work.Â
How it Happened:
- Niagara scored on a double steal with two outs in the first, but Nutile got a strikeout to strand two
- After UMBC went three up, three down in the first, Nutile worked a scoreless second, before the bats cam alive in the bottom half.
- Riggs drew a leadoff walk, which was followed by a Della Guardia single
- Erin Behel then brought them both home with a two RBI double to give UMBC a 2-1 lead
- Nutile then followed with a two-run homer to make it 4-0, with still no outs
- Catelyn Thrush followed with a single in her first at bat of the year
- Granzow walked, and then after a pitching change and a fly out, Amya Lundy walked to load the bases for Carroll who launched a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center for a grand slam that made it 8-1
- Riggs went-back-to-back with Carroll as she followed with a solo homer to make it 9-1
- The Retrievers sent 14 batters to the plate in the nine-run inning, as Nutile went 2-for-2 in the inning alone
- Granzow hit a solo homer to leadoff the bottom of the third, the second of her career and her first at home.
- Della Guardia then finished off an epic eight-pitch at bat with a solo homer in the fourth to make it 11-1
- The Purple Eagles got two runs back in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the game ended via run rule
- Nutile and Della Guardia each had two-hit games, and Della Guardia joined Granzow and Riggs with two runs scored
- Isabella DiGiandomenico pitched the final two innings for UMBC
The Retrievers will host Wisconsin tomorrow at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The game was pushed back an hour due to travel issues with Wisconsin.
