Softball Hosts Wisconsin, Colgate and Niagara for UMBC Spring Invite

The UMBC Softball team returns from a nearly month long road trip by hosting the UMBC Spring Invite, featuring Wisconsin, Colgate, Niagara and UAlbany, beginning on Thursday night.

After a winning weekend in Greensboro, the UMBC Softball team received a pair of accolades as Amaya Carroll and Amya Lundy were named the America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Carroll slashed .438/.563/1.001 OPS, while mashing two doubles, scoring a pair of runs, 3 RBI, and went 2-2 on stolen bases and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. 

Lundy batted .357 for the week with a .412 OBP and a team-high 5 RBI. She also doubled, scored 2 runs and went 3-for-3 on stolen bases. She was also perfect in the field at third base, recording 6 putouts and 8 assists on a 1.000 fielding percentage.

UMBC finished the weekend at the five-game UNCG Tournament with a 3-2 record after splitting a pair of games on Sunday. 

The Retrievers downed UMass, 6-3, before falling to host UNCG, 7-2, in game two.

Scouting the Opponents:

Niagara:

  • The last time the Retrievers faced Niagara was last season on February 19th where the Retrievers won 6-1.
  • Niagara is currently 1-5 with a game against Saint Peters on Wednesday.
  • The Purple Eagles are under head coach Larry Puzan who enters his 11th season with Niagara.
  • Niagara brings in a mix of a roster for the 2024 season, only adding four freshmen.

Wisconsin:
  • This is the first time the Badgers and Retrievers will face each other.
  • The Badgers enter the tournament with a 9-12 record after getting swept to the University of Utah last weekend.
  • The Badgers are under head coach Yvette Healy who enters her fourteenth season at Wisconsin.
  • Hilary Blomberg leads the Badgers offense with a .395 batting average, while Ava Kuszak trails behind with a .364 batting average.
  • Senior Gabi Salo leads the pitching staff with a 3.40 ERA in 45 innings pitched.

Colgate:
  • This is the first time the Raiders and Retrievers will face each other.
  • Colgate enters the week with a 8-11 record
  • The Raiders are under head coach Marissa Lamison-Myers who enters her seventh season with Colgate.
  • Senior Kara Fusco nabbed a spot on the Preseason All-Patriot League team.
  • Kiley Shelton leads the offense with a .382 batting average, while Adrienne Nardone follows behind with a .365 batting average (will change).
