Game Recap: Baseball |

Johnson Dazzles in Home Opener

BALTIMORE – Luke Johnson was sensational, striking out nine over 7.1 innings, but the UMBC Baseball Team dropped its home opener to Rider, 2-0, on Friday afternoon

Johnson allowed just two earned runs and one walk to go with his nine strikeouts. The game was scoreless through seven innings, but in the top of the 8th, Rider had a leadoff bunt single, and then broke the scoreless tie with a one out double. Johnson left the game and his inherited runner would score on a double, and that was all the scoring for the game.

Matthew Best made his first career appearance and start, going 2-for-5 with a double. Matt Ryan had the only other hit for the Retrievers, who drew nine walks and stranded 12 base runners.

Dawson Baracani walked in all four of his plate appearances, and Leewood Molessa and Derek Paris each drew a pair of walks as well.

Nick Remy struck out two and allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of work.

UMBC hosts Monmouth for a doubleheader at Alumni Field on Sunday. Both games will be nine innings, with the action beginning at 1 PM.
