Women's Lacrosse Opens 2024 Campaign at Home Against Delaware State on Saturday

ABOUT UMBC

  • The Retrievers return five starters and were picked to finish sixth in the America East Preseason Poll after tying for 4th-place with New Hampshire and Bryant in 2023. Defending champion UAlbany Is the unanimous pick to defend their title.
  • Senior Goalie Isabella Fontana led the America East in saves per game (9.50) and save percentage (.455) last season. She also placed 5th on the circuit with 2.29 ground balls per game.
  • Junior Kolby Weedon is UMBC's leading returning scorer after producing 27 goals and four assists last season. Weedon has amassed 72 career goals and 11 assists through her first two seasons in Baltimore. She also has won 85 draws in the black & gold.
  • Junior midfielder Katana Nelson scored 17 goals as a reserve last season and is expected to occupy a larger role in 2024.
  • Senior attacker Mary Ellis, who had 7 goals and 13 assists off the bench, is poised to take on a larger role on attack. 
  • Junior transfer Grace Bruce started six games and scored 10 goals at High Point last season and is expected to play a key role on attack for the Dawgs.
  • Senior Kennedy Evans is the heart & soul of the Retrievers' defense. last season, she set a new school single-season record with 31 caused turnovers and needs just 12 more to set the programs all-time mark in the category. 
  • Junior defender Avery Corino (14 caused turnovers), senior midfielder/defender Lauren Conduitt (19 ground balls) and junior defender Ellie Lawton (17 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers) are all returning starters.


ABOUT DELAWARE STATE

  • The Hornets finished 2-14 and were winless in the Atlantic Sun last season. The team will compete in the Northeast Conference in 2024.
  • Graduate student Ebony Reddick paced the Hornets with 24 goals last season and returns to the fold in 2024.
  • Senior attacker Rossella Nardi (16 goals, 3 assists), sophomore attacker Zahra Gotz 17 goals), and junior midfielder Saniya Craft (13 goals, 4 assists) will also return this season.
  • Gotz was named to the ASUN All-Freshman team after adding 25 draws and 13 ground balls.
  • Junior Yeda Couto-Erickson started nine contests last season in goal and allowed 14.7 goals per game along with a .411 save percentage.
