Softball Bats Come Alive, But Retrievers Drop a Pair of One-Run Decisions at UNCW Tournament

Box Score Wilmington, N.C. – The UMBC bats came alive on the final day of competition at the UNCW Tournament, but the Retrievers dropped a pair of one-run decisions, 7-6, to Providence and 5-4 to host UNC Wilmington.

Freshman Ella Squaires led the attack, collecting five hits in seven at-bats. She is hitting .552 through seven games.

Sophomore Amaya Carroll and freshman Amya Lundy both homered and drove in three runs each. Carroll launched a three-run shot in the opener and Lundy drove in Squaires with a two-run blast in the nightcap.

Freshman Isabella DiGiandomenico made her first career appearance in the circle and pitched the first 2.1 innings versus the Friars. Classmate Maggie Frisvold pitched the rest of the way, striking out three.

Junior pitcher Kya Matter was brilliant for six innings vs. UNCW, allowing a run with eight strikeouts and one walk allowed.

GAME 1: Providence 7, UMBC 6

  • Providence scored a run in the top half of each of the first two innings to go up 2-0
  • The Retrievers tied the game up in the bottom half of the second when Amaya Carroll smacked a leadoff single and moved to third when Erin Behel reached on an error. Jolie Torrens then drove Carroll home with an RBI single before Behel would eventually tie the game, scoring on a wild pitch
  • The Friars would respond quickly scoring twice in the third and then twice again in the fifth
  • UMBC tied the game up with four runs in the fifth
  • Ella Squaries singled and moved to third on an Ashley Della Guardia (2 hits) one-out single. Emily Riggs brought home Squaires with an RBI single and Carroll followed with a three-run homer to tie the game.
  • Providence re-took the lead in the top of the sixth with a one out solo homer and UMBC couldn't respond in the bottom half, as the game was ended early due to the two-hour drop dead timing rule.

GAME 2: UNCW 5, UMBC 4

  • Squaires led the game off with a triple and Lundy crushed a long ball to left center to give the Retrievers an early 2-0 lead.
  • Freshman Haley Luginbill added an RBI single with two outs in the first, scoring Emily Riggs and UMBC led, 3-0.
  • The Seahawks scored a single run in their half of the third, but a Lundy two-out single plated pinch runner Julia Colton to get that run back in the top of the fourth.
  • The first four Seahawks reached in the bottom of the seventh, which included a walk and a pair of bunt hits. Jerzie Nutile entered with the tying and go-ahead runs on third and second and induced one ground out, but an infield miscue plated two runs.

UMBC's next scheduled contest is Wednesday, March 6 when they will host Morgan State at 2:00 p.m.
