Ella Squaires and senior
Ashley Della Guardia combined for 11 hits, while sophomore
Emily Riggs homered and drove in six runs as the UMBC Softball team splite with Saint Peter's on Friday at The Diamond to open the 2024 season.
The Retrievers dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker in nine innings in game one, before pounding out 19 hits in a 9-1, six inning victory in game two.
Out of the leadoff spot, Squaires went 6-for-8, including a 4-4 in game two, with four doubles and three runs scored. She also drew two walks, one intentional, and stole two bases.
Della Guardia went 5-for-8 with a homer and four RBI on the day. Her fifth hit gave her 100 for her career.
Freshman
Jolie Torrens went 4-for-8 with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base, and also had the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth in game two.
Kya Matter got it done both at the plate and in the circle, going six innings and allowing just two runs in game one, while going 1-for-2 with an RBI double in game one.
Freshman
Maggie Frisvold was solid in her first career pitching appearance, coming on in relief and striking our three while allowing just one in 2.1 innings.
Riggs had a monster game two at the plate, she started it 3-for-3 with a homer, double, single and five RBI.
Jerzie Nutile picked up the win in the second game, pitching six innings, striking out six and allowing an unearned run.
Freshmen
Amya Lundy,
Meghan Shirey and
Courtney Johnson all picked up their first career hits, with Shirey picking up an RBI, while sophomore
Amaya Carroll went 3-for-3 at the plate.
