Men's Hoops Set to Open 24-25 Season Against Penn State York on Monday Afternoon

  • UMBC is competing in its 56th season as a varsity men's basketball program and has compiled a 658-929 (.413) record during that span. The program began DI competition in 1986-87 and has recorded a 442-643 (.411) record.
  • UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 147-109 (.574) over the past eight seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program high.
  •  Senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. was selected to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team. Banks, an America East Third Team pick last season, averaged 15.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game with 85 three-point field goals.
  • UMBC was picked fifth in the America East Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Fourth-year head coach Jim Ferry is the program's 10th all-time head coach.
  • UMBC has added seven newcomers to the roster this season. Graduate student Josh Odunowo (Laurel, Md./Perkiomen School/Columbia University), junior Chaydon Stone (Macon, Ga./Jones County/New Mexico State Junior College), sophomore Daylon Dickerson (Kaufman, Tex./Kaufman/McLennan Community College), junior Louie Jordan (Leicester, England/Charwood College/Weber State), freshman Tim Eze (Kleinburg, Ontario/Bill Crothers Prep), freshman Jake Stout (Catonsville, Md./Boys Latin), and freshman Torin Bosch (Chandler, Ariz./Perkiomen School (Pa.)) will all wear the black and gold this upcoming season. 

ABOUT PENN STATE YORK
  • The Nittany Lions went 28-7 last season and were 14-5 in conference play.
  • Penn State York won the PSUAC Tournament as they defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny in OT, 77-76.
  • The squad lost to Penn State Wilkes-Barre in the USCAA Division II National Championship Semifinals, 73-54.
 
 INSIDE THE SERIES
  • UMBC is 3-0 against Penn State York.
  • Last season, Graduate student forward Khydarius Smith led five UMBC players in double-figures with 15 points as the Retrievers defeated the Nittany Lions, 84-65.
  • Smith converted 7-of-10 field goals and threw down three dunks in 15 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Marcus Banks Jr. (13 points), freshman guard Ace Valentine (12 points) and junior guard Bryce Johnson (10) also produced double-figures.
