BALTIMORE - The UMBC Women's Basketball team will begin its new era under first year head coach
Candice Hill when it hosts #18 Maryland on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the season-opener for both teams.
The matchup will be the tenth all-time between the two programs and the first sinceÂ
92-61 win by the Terps in College Park in December of 2018. Maryland leads the series 9-0. The last time the Terps came to UMBC was in November of 2011 when they pulled away late to defeat the hosts, 70-59, in front of nearly 3,000 fans at The RAC.
This game will mark the first time a Top 25 ranked team will play at The Peake in any sport since its opening in February of 2018.Â
The Retrievers return a core group, while adding seven newcomers to the team for the 2024-25 season. UMBC is coming off a sixth place finish in the America East with a 6-10 conference record and a 10-19 overall record. The Retrievers add a new coaching staff for the season consisting of head coach Candice Hill, assistant coaches Delmar "Buck" Carey, Reggie Daniels, and Maggie Tien.Â
Maryland is coached by head coach Brenda Frese who has led the Terrapins to a National Championship in 2006 and earned National Coach of the Year twice. Maryland was predicted to finish in the top four of the 18-team Big Ten Conference by the league's head coaches and media panel.Â
Senior guard Shayanne Sellers was named to the 10-player Preseason All-Big Ten Team for the second straight season. The Terrapins return All-Big honorees Sellers and Bri McDaniel, as well as Emily Fisher, Emma Chardon, and Allie Kubek. They also signed seven transfers and welcomed three freshmen for the 24-25 season.
