SETTING THE STAGEÂ Â
- UMBC opened their 57th season against Penn State York on November 4th. This is the 39th season of DI hoops for the Black and Gold.
- In season openers, UMBC now holds a 16-22 mark in DI play.
- UMBC has dropped five straight against the Terriers, a former America East foe.
- The Retrievers are 7-5 all-time in Baltimore.
- The two teams have not met since 2/23/13 when BU was a member of the America East Conference. The Terriers, who are now in the Patriot League, won the battle by a score of 68-59.
 ABOUT THE TERRIERS
- The Terriers are coming off a 60-58 loss against defending NEC Champion Wagner in Boston on Tuesday night.
- BU's first victory of the season came against Dartmouth last Saturday.
- Kyrone Alexander is pacing the Terriers with 12.2 ppg.
- Malcolm Chimezie is grabbing a team-best 6.6 rpg.
LAST TIME OUT
- UMBC senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. and graduate student forward Josh Odunowo combined for 39 points, but the Retrievers lost a 78-68 decision against the Hampton Pirates at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Tuesday evening.
- Banks Jr. (21 points) shot 8-for-15 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from long-distance, while Odunowo scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.Â
-  UMBC (3-3) fell behind 24-15 midway through the opening half but went on a 15-5 run to grab a 30-29 edge with 5:12 left in the stanza. Banks Jr. (11 first-half points) splashed back-to-back treys to punctuate the spurt, ignited by a pair of buckets in the paint by sophomore forward Daylon Dickerson. It was the host's final lead as Hampton took a 40-36 lead at the break. Graduate student guard Noah Farrakhan recorded 15 of his 19 points in the opening half to spark the visitors.
- Â The Retrievers trailed just 50-48 with 14:28 remaining after Banks Jr. stuck a jumper, but the Pirates rattled off ten straight points to extend their lead to 60-48 at the 12-minute mark.
- Â UMBC never went away and fought back to inch within 67-62 with 6:10 left after a layup by Banks Jr. following a turnover. However, the Pirates scored the next five points to widen their lead to 72-62 at 4:17, and the Retrievers could not recover.
- Â Junior guard George Beale Jr. scored 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting to pace the visitors. Junior forward Kyrese Mullen produced a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Graduate student guard Wayne Bristol chipped in with 15 points and nine caroms.
- Â Hampton (2-3) held a 36-22 advantage on the glass and shot an even 50 percent from the floor (26-of-52). The Pirates also made 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) of their long-range attempts and converted 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) of their free throws.
- Â The Retrievers shot 48.1 percent overall (26-of-54) and made 8-of-23 attempts (34.8 percent) of their 3-point tries.
BOMBS AWAY
- • UMBC leads the AE with 9.53s made per game this season and are 40th in the nation.
- • The Retrievers 17 makes against Valley Forge were an America East single-game high.
- • The Retrievers lead the league in 3-pt field goal percentage (.380).
- • Marcus Banks Jr.(3.0) and Louie Jordan (2.5) rank 2nd and 6th respectively in treys per game.
- Jordan is second in 3-pt percentage (.517) while Banks Jr. is 5th (.462).
 SHARING IS CARING
- UMBC dished an America East high 31 assists in the win versus Valley Forge. It was their highest output since they handed out 29 vs. Coppin St. on 11/30/2022.
- It was also the most in the conference since Maine and Bryant recorded 32 during the 2022-23 season.
- The Retrievers are 2nd in the league in the category at 16.0 pg and are 39th in the nation.
 TAKING A LICKING & KEEP ON TICKING
- Bryce Johnson drew a career-high eight fouls in back-to-back games against Coppin State and Saint Peter's.
- Johnson leads the squad with 29 fouls drawn thus far in 2024-25.
 A PROGRAM ON THR RISE
- UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 147-112 (.570) over the past nine seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program-high.
- UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
- Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (formerly the UMBC Event Center) officially opened on Feb. 3, 2018, as the UMBC men's basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts before a capacity crowd of 4,753. Both the men's and women's basketball teams played their February and March games in the new facility, which included three post-season victories.
- The on-campus facility can accommodate nearly 6,000 patrons for commencements, concerts, featured speakers, and other events. It includes spectator facilities, such as concessions, catering, hospitality, restrooms, security and guest services.
 COACH FERRY
- Jim Ferry is in his 23rd season as a collegiate head coach and his third at UMBC.
- Ferry led the Retrievers to consecutive 18-14 records as well as an appearance in the America East Finals in 2021-22.
- Prior to his arrival in Baltimore, Ferry served in 2020-21 as the interim head coach at Penn State. He led the Nittany Lions to an 11-14 overall mark and a
- 7-12 Big Ten record that included wins over NCAA Tournament
- teams No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Virginia Tech , Rutgers, and Maryland (twice).
- Ferry spent 10 seasons as head coach at LIU Brooklyn, guiding the program to unprecedented levels of success. He led the Blackbirds to the Northeast Conference regular-season titles and tournament championships in 2011 and 2012, including their first NCAA Championship appearance in 14 years.

At New Mexico Junior College: Averaged 12.6 points per game in just 17.5 minutes per game…Shot 35.3 percent (54-of-153) from behind the arc and 79.1 percent (72-of-91) from the free throw line…Also added 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Helped lead the squad to the Region V Semifinals last season and was named to the Region V All-Tournament Team…Scored 34 points in a double-overtime game against Clarendon and splashed seven treys in the contest. High School: Averaged 19.2 points at Jones County as a senior and was named First Team All-County.
