Smithfield, RI – Graduate student defender
Giuseppe Indelicato scored with 18:03 remaining to give the UMBC men's soccer team a 1-0 America East Conference victory against the Bryant Bulldogs on Friday evening at Beirne Stadium. The Retrievers clinched a berth in the upcoming America East Tournament as the Dawgs moved into a tie for second place with New Hampshire with one game remaining.
"That was our third straight game versus a 2023 NCAA Tournament team in our own conference," UMBC head coach
Anthony Adams explained. "It shows the tremendous strength of our league. I couldn't be prouder of our guys as Bryant is a difficult place to play. Now we must get ready for NJIT on Tuesday night."
UMBC played tremendous defense the entire evening but had trouble creating offense until they finally hit pay dirt on their first shot on goal off the night. In the 72nd minute, Picotto drove a corner kick to the back post for graduate student
Hans Nesheim, who headed the ball into the center of the box. Indelicato broke free and tapped his first career game-winner into the lower right corner from the three yard-line. It was his second tally of the campaign.
Retriever's goalkeeper
Emigdio Tormo Lopez made seven saves and registered his sixth shutout of the season. The junior made a spectacular stop with just over 40 minutes left as he made a sliding save to thwart a breakaway attempt in the box by Mark Pitarch. It was Bryant's best opportunity of the night.
Nesheim now has a career-high nine assists on the season and is second in the conference in the category. Picotto took over the team-lead with his 10
th point of the season as he now has four goals and two assists.
The Retrievers will host NJIT on Senior Night on Tuesday evening.
