Volleyball Welcomes Binghamton and UAlbany to The Peake

The UMBC Volleyball team will play a pair of America East rivals this weekend whent they host Binghamton (Friday, 6 p.m.) and UAlbany (1 p.m.) at the The Peake.

Sunday's match will be the annual Pink Match to support the fight against breast cancer.

Last time out, he UMBC Volleyball team began America East play with a four set win at NJIT (25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon.

Mia Bilusic once again led the way, finishing with 21 kills on .280 hitting, four blocks and a team-high 14 digs en route to her second double-double of the season. 

Hannah Dobbs continued her stellar freshman campaign with 15 kills, while classmate Izzy Ostvig had career highs in assists (31) and blocks (four). 

Mila Ilieva, who had the winning kill in the fourth set, tallied a game-best five blocks to go along with her five kills. Fellow middle Abby Erickson also had five kills to go with four blocks.

Freshman Jada James had a match-high four aces, while Hannah Howard, Serin Maden and Ayisa Miller all added a pair of aces.

Maden had a double-double of her own, tallying 13 assists and 10 digs, while Howard and Miller added 13 digs and 11 digs, respectively.

Helen Frankovich had five kills and a block in the winning effort.  

Scouting Binghamton:
  • The Bearcats are 11-5 on the season and are riding a three game winning streak going into their game vs the Retrievers 
  • Last season they were 15-13 and made it to the America East Championship where the fell to UMBC in three sets
  • Fifth year senior hitter Tsvetelina Illieva is the two-time defending America East Player of the year and is the current team leader in kills with 265, this is over 100 more than the next closest teammate
  • Junior setter Lottie Scully is the team leader in assists this season with 453, she lead the America East in assists with 679 last season
  • Defending America East Rookie of the Year Misa Dlouha is the team leader in blocks with 80, last year as just a freshman she led the America East conference in blocks (141) and blocks per set (1.34)
Scouting UAlbany:
  • The Great Danes are 4-10 on the season, but are 0-4 on the road.
  • The Danes have lost four of their last five games, their most recent win came from September 21st when they swept Coppin State in the "UniWyo Invite" at Wyoming
  • Freshman setter Maria Olga Siapani has had a fantastic start to her college career, the Cyprus native leads the team in assists with 411.
  • Junior outside hitter Shynelle Woroniuk is the team leader in kills with 182, last season she placed sixth in the America East Conference in kills per set with 3.11
  • Sophomore blocker Gabriella Karman leads the team in blocks with 36, last season she led the conference in hitting percentage with an impressive .316 average
