Women's Soccer Closes Non-Conference Slate with Dominant 2-0 Win Over Iona

BALTIMORE -- Natasha Munro and Cheyenne Payne each scored in the second half as the UMBC Women's Soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Iona on Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park

Sara Gavagan made three saves as she picked up a shutout in her first career start.

UMBC held a 20-4 shot advantage, 13-3 edge in shots on goal, and had six corners to Iona's one.

How it Happened:

  • The Retrievers were on the press from the beginning of the match as Delainey Varela-Keen had a shot saved in the third minute

  • Gavagan made a nice stop in the 11th minute to keep it scoreless

  • Misa Kasparcova and Munro each had shots stopped by the Iona keeper within the next two minutes

  • Kasparcova had another shot saved in the 21st and Annie Grove had one stopped by the keeper in the 24th.

  • Payne and Meghan McKye each had shots on goal stopped as well, while Gavagan made a save in the 38th to send the game into the half scoreless.

  • UMBC outshot the Gaels 11-3 in the first half and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

  • The Retrievers finally broke through in the 59th when Binko took a ball deep down the left side and her cross found the foot of Munro who smashed it right under the crossbar.

  • UMBC continued to pressure as McKye and Reagan Casper each had shots saved within 90 seconds after the goal

  • Payne put the game away in the 85th with a blast from 20 yards out that just snuck under the crossbar.

UMBC heads to defending regular season champion Binghamton for a Sunday matinee.
