Women's Soccer Prepares for George Washington On Sunday Afternoon

George Washington (2-1-1) at UMBC (2-3) | Sunday, Sept. 3, 4:00 PM | Retriever Soccer Park | Watch | Live Stats

DAWG BYTES

- The "Rick Stainton Era" began with a bang as the UMBC women's soccer team blanked Kutztown, 2-0, in the season-opener at Retriever Soccer Park on Aug. 17.

- Freshman forward Payton Schenning, Maryland's 2022 Gatorade Girls Player of the Year, headed in the game-winner just two minutes into her career off a gorgeous corner kick into the box from graduate student Lola Negrete.  The Retrievers got an insurance marker in the '70 when freshman striker Cheyenne Payne tapped in a feed from junior midfielder Bella Roppolo from five yards out.

- After falling to Longwood and Drexel, the Dawgs evened their record with a 1-0 victory at LIU last Sunday. Senior forward Meghan McKye struck just 12 minutes in with a laser from 15 yards out after shedding three defenders.

- UMBC junior midfielder Esther Juretzka scored her second career goal in the opening half, but the host Towson Tigers scored six unanswered markers and went on to an 8-1 victory on Thursday evening at Tiger Field.

- The hosts scored a pair of goals in the first eleven minutes of the contest, but UMBC got right back into the match in the 19' on a hustle play deep in Towson's territory. McKye won a loose ball along the endline before she was able to locate Juretzka, who was free at the top of the center of the box. Juretzka then snuck a low shot into the right-corner of the goal past the keeper, Riley Melendez, who made a diving attempt to her left. The hosts, however, scored six unanswered times en route to the victory.

- McKye is 16th in the America East with 3 pts thus far.

A GLANCE AT THE COLONIALS

- The Colonials, who went 7-5-6 last season, have gotten off to a good start in 2023.  GW scored five first-half goals in the season-opening victory against Delaware State. Midfielder Aoi Kataoka assisted on the first two goals while linemate Abby Caoile came off the bench to score a pair of goals.

- Kataoka and striker Isabel Kelly found the back of the net in a 2-1 win at UNC Greensboro this past Monday.

- GW played Youngstown State to a 1-1 draw with Youngstown State on Thursday afternoon. Junior Caitlin Cunningham tallied GW's lone goal in the 32nd minute. The Colonials drew even in the match off a sweeping cross from junior Kelly Poole that was guided in by Cunningham. The goal was Cunningham's second the season and proved to be the final tally of the afternoon. The assist was Poole's third of the season, while first-year Rose Vigran also picked up her first collegiate assist on the play.

- Caoile and Cunningham lead GW with two goals each while Poole has already picked up a team-high three assists. Kataoka has added a goal and two assists.

- Grace Cowe (144:52) and Rose Hemans (180:00) have both made two starts in goal.

INSIDE THE SERIES
