BALTIMORE – The second largest crowd in Retriever Soccer Park history witnessed a dominant UMBC (1-0-1) performance, but the Retrievers came away with a 1-1 draw versus Old Dominion (0-0-2) on Monday evening.
A student-based crowd of 2,891 descended upon the field for the opening home game of the campaign. Only a turnout of 3,768 versus Maryland in 2017 exceeded the attendance to cap UMBC's "Move-In" weekend.
UMBC senior midfielder
Jordan Travers (Urbana, Md.) scored in the 37' as the hosts controlled the first half. They continued to press in the second half, but could not come up with the insurance marker and ODU got the game-tying goal in the 78'.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two squads traded opportunities in the 13' and 14' with shots on goal, but the goalkeepers were equal to the task.
- In the 37', UMBC defender Hans Nesheim and forward Robbie Ryerson worked a give-and-go, with the latter sending Nesheim down the right wing. Nesheim's cross bounded across the goal mouth and Travers slid to re-direct the ball into the left side of the net.
- UMBC attempted all five corners in the first half, but ODU scored on its lone corner of the night, as Jonas Schmalbach headed in a Nathan Lam effort from the right corner.
- The Retrievers responded well, as Taylor Calheira and Spencer Hanks put strong shots on goal in the 79' and 84' respectively, but ODU goalkeeper made two of his six saves on those shots.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Anthony Adams on the crowd
"This has become a great venue to watch soccer. I was here early in Pete's (Caringi,Jr) tenure and saw the crowds start to grow. (Tonight) was awesome to see, but I'm not surprised because people in this area and on campus love to watch soccer."
NOTES
- The goal was the second of Travers' career and the assist was the first for Ryerson.
- UMBC outshot ODU and Retriever goalkeeper Jay Gillespie made three saves.
