Women's Soccer's Furious Second Half Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short Against Longwood

Controversial Late Equalizer Taken Off The Board After Offsides Call

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's soccer team outplayed the visiting Longwood Lancers in the second half but came up just short, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park. Both teams are now 1-1 on the young season.

Junior goalkeeper Abbey Cowles made several outstanding saves to keep the hosts within striking distance and finished with a game-high six stops.

Longwood freshman forward Peyton Curney scored the lone goal in the 19th minute following a defensive miscue along the Retrievers' backline. Curney found herself all alone inside the box and lofted a 15-yard winner into the upper left corner of the net for the game-winner.

The Retrievers mounted a furious comeback attempt over the final twenty minutes as they had several quality chances to net the equalizer.

Junior midfielder Esther Juretzka directed a powerful header just over the crossbar following a corner kick with 19:35 left. Just three minutes later, Juretzka booted a free kick from 30-yards that sailed just over the crossbar.

It appeared that UMBC had finally put one past Lancers' goalkeeper Mary Kate Levush (4 saves) with 6:36 remaining but the goal was erased due to an offsides call.  Graduate student Lola Negrete drilled a free kick into the box that bounced to sophomore back Ava Schreiber. Schreiber centered the ball to senior forward Meghan McKye, who tapped in the controversial marker that was taken off the board.

The Dawgs were unable to get another quality opportunity over the final few minutes.

Longwood, who defeated the Retrievers by a 4-1 count last season in Virginia, outshot UMBC by a 13-8 margin but the hosts held a 7-2 advantage over the final forty-five minutes.  The Retrievers also attempted five corners compared to three by the Lancers.

UMBC will play the first of three straight road matches at Drexel on Thursday evening.
