UMBC Drops 15-14 Heartbreaker at UAlbany; Bockstie Nets 150th Career Goal

Retrievers Erased Five-Goal Halftime Deficit to Even Game In Fourth Quarter

Box Score Albany, NY – The visiting UMBC women's lacrosse team held a 5-4 lead against UAlbany after the opening quarter, but the Great Danes rallied to defeat the Retrievers, 15-14, in an America East Conference contest on Friday afternoon.
 
Trailing 11-6 at halftime, the Retrievers turned in a terrific second-half effort as they outscored the Great Danes by an 8-4 margin after the break.  UMBC (6-5, 0-3 AE) scored four consecutive goals to even the game at 13-13 with 10:16 remaining in regulation, however, the hosts scored a pair of goals over the final 2:45 and held on for the victory.
 
Junior attacker Dymin Gerow scored three goals and distributed a team-high two assists to lead UMBC with five points on the day. Graduate student attacker Lauren Cremen also added a hat-trick while sophomore midfielder Katana Nelson, sophomore attacker Kolby Weedon (team-high five draw controls), and senior attacker Claire Bockstie  (150 career goals) each found the back of the net twice. Junior goalkeeper Isabella Fontana made a game-high 11 saves.
 
Sarah Falk scored a game-high five goals and Shonley Wallace added four tallies to lead UAlbany, who improved to 7-5 (3-0 AE).
 
The Great Danes won 19-of-33 draw controls and outshot the Retrievers by a 36-29 margin on the day.
 
How It Happened
 
- The Great Danes scored a pair of goals in the first 2:12 of the contest to grab a 2-0 lead as Falk and Wallace both found the back of the net.
- The Retrievers answered with four straight goals to take a 4-2 advantage with 7:05 left in the opening frame. Gerow and Nelson ignited the run with woman-up tallies to even the score. Bockstie took a feed from Gerow at the 7:36 mark to give UMBC their first lead of the game and then Cremen scored off an assist from junior attacker Mary Ellis to complete the stretch.
- Wallace scored on a free potion shot to cut UAlbany's deficit to 4-3 but Bockstie ripped another tally from the right side to make it 5-3.
- The hosts inched within 5-4 before the end of the first quarter after Falk took a feed from Hogg and beat Fontana.
-The Great Danes scored the first three goals of the second quarter, including a pair by Wallace, to grab a 7-5 advantage with 7:09 left.
- Weedon scored on a free position shot with 5:52 left before the half but UAlbany scored the final four goals of the period to take an 11-6 lead at intermission. Grace McCauley, who scored three goals on the day, tallied twice during the spurt.
- The Retrievers played inspired lacrosse in the second half as Ellis scored on a free position opportunity to cut the deficit to 11-7 at the 12:35 mark.
- Falk answered with a free position tally of her own but Nelson delivered her second free position goal of the game to make it 12-8 with 6:13 left in the third.
- Cremen followed just forty-one seconds later with a free position tally to bring the Retrievers within 12-9.
- Allie Maloney stopped the bleeding with a free position goal for UAlbany, however, UMBC scored four straight times to knot the score at 13-13.
- Jenna McDermott ignited the run with a goal after a dodge from the left side with just 19 seconds left in the third quarter. Cremen then scored a woman up goal off an assist by Gerow to bring UMBC within 13-11 with 13:12 left in regulation. Weedon came from behind the net to stuff in another at the 10:58 mark and Gerow evened the game after a dodge to the center of the field just 42 seconds later.
- Both teams had opportunities to go out in front until Falk cashed in the game-winner on a free position opportunity at the 2:45 mark.
- McCauley gave the hosts a big insurance tally with 1:46 remaining before Gerow managed to cut the deficit to 15-14 with 46 ticks left.
- UMBC won the critical draw control and called a timeout with 35 seconds left but Weedon was denied at the doorstep just before the final whistle blew.
