Softball Heads to UMass Lowell for First America East Road Series of 2023

The River Hawks and Retrievers are the league's top home run-hitting squads.

UMBC softball (13-9, 5-0 America East) will venture onto the road for the first time in America East Conference play when they travel to Lowell, Mass. to take on the UMass Lowell River Hawks (12-18-1, 2-3 America East).

The two teams will play a doubleheader at River View Field on Friday, April 7, beginning at 1:00 p.m., then compete in a single game on Saturday at noon. The games will be streamed on AE.tv.

Last Time Out:
  • Graduate student Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and sophomore Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) dazzled in the circle as the UMBC Softball team completed the three game sweep of Binghamton with a pair of 3-2 wins on Sunday, April 2.
  • In game one, sophomore 1B Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs, including the tie-breaking, and eventual game-winning, solo homer.
  • In game two, graduate student SS/C Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) scored the tying-run and drove in another.
Retriever Notes:
  • UMBC extended its winning streak to five and the 5-0 start is its best in America East play since a 7-0 beginning to the 2015 campaign.
  • Junior catcher Lindsey Evix earned America East Player of the Week honors. She banged out four hits in nine at-bats versus Binghamton, drove in four runs and hit a 3-run walk-off homer in Saturday's 3-1 victory.
  • UMBC is 49th nationally with a 2.44 earned run average. Matter is 32nd with a mark of 1.39.
  • Keating has a six-game hitting streak alive heading into the series at Lowell with 10 hits in her last 16 plate appearances. She has raised her batting average to .379, fourth-best in America East.

Scouting UMass Lowell:
  • After taking two of three games versus Bryant last weekend, the River Hawks were blanked in a doubleheader versus Boston University (4-0, 8-0) on April 4.
  • In the rubber game versus the Bulldogs, junior Ellie Frederick homered and pitcher Ryley White blanked the opposition in a 3-0 victory.
  • UML leads America East with 17 home runs, two more than second-place UMBC.
  • Graduate student Mya Case has blasted six round-trippers to lead the conference.
Series Record
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 13-11 and took two of three in Baltimore in 2022.
  • Coppersmith earned both victories last season and twirled a one-hitter in the 6-0 victory on April 30. She also homered in the 8-0 victory on May 1.
