Coppersmith Tosses Third Career Perfect Game; Softball Blasts Six Homers in Saturday Split

Smithfield, R.I. -- Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) tossed the third perfect game of her career, her tenth overall no-hitter, and the offense exploded for six homers as the UMBC Softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday at Bryant.

Coppersmith got offensive support on homers from Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.), Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.), Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) en route to a 9-0 win in six innings in game one.

Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) and Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) homered in game two, but a late rally came up short in a 6-5 loss.

Game 1:
  • Evix drove in Granzow with an RBI single in the third to put UMBC up 1-0.
  • Riggs walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, and Coppersmith helped her cause with a run-scoring ground out to make it 3-0
  • Granzow hit her first career homer in the fourth and Evix immediately followed with a booming blast to make it 5-0
  • Della Guardia and Wilson each hit two-run homers in the sixth to make it 9-0
  • Coppersmith struck out 11 of the 18 batters she faced en route to the perfect game.
Game 2:
  • Bryant jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but a two-run homer from Riggs closed the gap to 5-2 in the fourth
  • The hosts made it 6-2 after four, but a Keating two-run homer and a Wilson RBI ground out cut it to 6-5 in the fifth, but UMBC could get no closer.
The series will conclude tomorrow at 1 p.m.
