Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Thwarts NJIT's Late Rally; Prevails, 12-10 in Newark

Taylor Bohanan nets his first career 3-goal game; the senior nets the game-winner and insurance marker in the late stages of the game.

Newark, N.J. – Senior Taylor Bohanan netted his first career hat trick, including the fourth quarter game-winner and insurance goals as UMBC edged NJIT, 12-10, at Lubetkin Field.

The Retrievers improved to 8-4 overall and evened their America East mark at 3-3.

Senior attackman Mike Doughty added two goals and two assists for the Retrievers, while graduate student linemate Brett Baucia added a pair of goals and one assist.

The Highlanders (2-10, 0-6 AE) battled back from a pair of early five-goal deficits and knotted the game at 10-all with 7:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. But UMBC won the ensuing face-off, and Baucia found a trailing Bohanan in the left alley and the senior beat NJIT goalkeeper Liam Brown on a turf-hugger with 6:17 left.

NJIT had two possessions to re-tie the score, but UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made a stop on their first effort and sophomore midfielder Jordan Galloway caused a turnover with 2:42 remaining. The Retrievers took advantage as Doughty beat a double-team in the corner and fed Bohanan in front, and he slipped a shot past Brown to give the visitors a 12-10 lead with 91 seconds remaining.

The win snapped a three-game road losing slide by UMBC.

NJIT outshot UMBC, 43-36 and took 14 of 26 face-offs. But the Retrievers caused nine of NJIT's 20 turnovers and UMBC only failed to clear once in 20 tries.

After NJIT forged an early 1-1 tie, UMBC scored five consecutive goals to lead, 6-1, on a goal by senior defenseman Tony Diallo at the 4:14 mark of the second quarter. The Highlanders broke the drought and the teams then exchanged two scores apiece as the Retrievers took an 8-4 halftime edge.

After an exchange of goals to start the second half, NJIT scored three goals in 41 seconds to trim a 9-5 deficit to 9-8 after 45 minutes.
UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made 11 saves, while Brown stopped 14 UMBC efforts on goal.

Junior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won 9-of-16 draws, came up with seven ground balls and scored his second goal of the season.

The Retrievers conclude the regular season on Saturday, April 29 when they host Vermont on Senior Day. The ceremony will take place before the noon face-off time.
