Softball Takes a Pair From Binghamton to Complete Three-Game Sweep

BALTIMORE – Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) dazzled in the circle as the UMBC Softball team completed the three game sweep of Binghamton with a pair of 3-2 wins on Sunday.

Coppersmith struck out 12 and walked none in a complete game victory in game one, while Matter pitched her second complete game victory of the series, striking out eight, walking two and allowing just one earned run.

In game one, Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs, including the tie-breaking, and eventual game-winning, solo homer.

In game two, Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) scored the tying-run and and drove in another.

With the wins, UMBC improved to 13-9 overall and 5-0 in America East play.

Game 1
  • An illegal pitch wiped out an inning-ending strikeout in the first and BU hit a solo homer with the extra opportunity.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) and Keating hit back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a Coppersmith sacrifice bunt.
  • Della Guardiawould then tie the game on an RBI groundout that scored Stott.
  • In the top of the second, Binghamton again took advantage of a strikeout being nullified by an illegal pitch and hit another solo homer.
  • Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) singled to leadoff the bottom of the second. Her pinch runner Erin Behel (Ellicott City, Md.) moved to second on a Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) sacrifice bunt, and then to third on an Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) single.
  • Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md) ended an epic nine pitch at-bat with an RBI groundout to tie the game again.
  • Della Guardia blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the third to give UMBC a 3-2 lead.
  • Both teams would threaten at times, but neither would score as that would be the final
  • Stott was the only Retriever with multiple hits, tallying two singles.

Game 2
  • Binghamton got on the board in the third with a leadoff bloop double off a glove, and then a pair of groundouts eventually scored the runner
  • The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when Keating walked and stole second to leadoff the inning.
  • Della Guardia then reached on a one-out error and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball.
  • Evix then blooped a single to shallow center to score Keating and tie the game.
  • Amaya Carroll (Hanover, Md.) then gave the Retrievers the lead with a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Della Guardia
  • After Matter worked a perfect fifth, Granzow worked a one-out walk, stole second and then scored on a Keating two-out single.
  • Binghamton would get a run back in the sixth after an error extended the inning and allow an unearned run to score, but Matter got a flyout to left to strand the bases loaded
  • Matter got a strikeout to start the seventh, and then Rigs caught a liner for the second out
  • The Bearcats would get a single after being down to their last strike, but Keating made a great fielding play up the middle in the following at-bat to get the runner at first and end the game
  • Keating was the lone Retriever with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with a walk
UMBC hits the road for a three-game America East series at UMass Lowell next weekend. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday before closing the series with a single contest at 12 p.m. on Saturday
