Baseball blanked by #20 UConn on Sunday

Storrs, Conn.  – Senior outfielder Justin Taylor went 2-for-4 but the visiting UMBC baseball team was blanked by the No. 20 ranked UConn Huskies, 11-0, on Sunday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark. The Retrievers dropped all three games in the series and fell to 11-12 on the season.

Senior catcher Tony Krueger was the only other Retriever to reach base twice as he went 1-1 and drew a walk.

UMBC sophomore starter Nick Remy fell to 2-4 after allowing three earned runs over three innings of work. Remy allowed four hits, walked two and fanned two over his 77-pitch outing. Dorn was effective in relief as he failed to allow a run in his two innings of work.

The Retrievers had a golden opportunity in the top of the first inning as Diaz and Taylor opened the contest with consecutive singles off starter Jack Sullivan. However, Sullivan (4-1, 5 inn., 6 hits) retired three straight batters to get out of the frame unscathed.

UConn (20-6) scored the only run that they would need in the bottom of the second as catcher Ryan Hyde delivered an RBI groundout to second base.

The Huskies scored four runs in the bottom of the third as designated hitter Luke Broadhurst produced a two-run single to left field to open the scoring. Two more runs came around to score on a wild pitch by Remy.

The hosts scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-0 on three straight RBI singles.

UConn pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final runs of the contest.

Broadhurst went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs while first baseman Ben Huber went 3-for-5 and scored three times.

UMBC will travel up the beltway to take on Towson on Tuesday.
