Courtney Coppersmith Earns America East Softball Player of the Week Honor

The Retrievers face Maryland in College Park on Wednesday evening.

UMBC softball (17-12) plays its final non-conference contest of the 2023 regular season when they play at Maryland (29-13) on Wednesday, April 19. The first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Maryland Softball Stadium and the game will be broadcast on B1G+ ($).

Last Time Out:
  • The Retrievers won their fourth consecutive America East Conference series of the season, edging host UAlbany, 3-2, in eight innings at UAlbany Field on April 16.
  • Senior Madison Wilson continued her clutch RBI run, belting the game-winning home run to right field to lead off the eighth inning. It was her fourth long ball of the season.
  • Graduate student Courtney Coppersmith entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and allowed only one base-runner to earn her third win (3-2) of the season. Sophomore Kya Matter pitched the first six frames and only allowed one earned run against an outstanding hitting club
  • UMBC (9-2 America East) remained in first place in the America East Conference, two games ahead of Binghamton.
Retriever Notes:
  • Coppersmith earned America East Player of the Week honors. In the batter's box, she hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in the 12-3 win over UAlbany on Saturday. In the circle, she picked up a win in relief on Sunday and struck out nine Great Danes in eight innings of work over the weekend.
  • Coppersmith ranks 17th in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (10.2) and 24th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.0).
  • The team's 2.50 ERA is ranked 50th nationally. Sophomore Kya Matter leads the way with a 1.55 ERA in 104.0 innings pitched.
  • Junior catcher Lindsey Evix, who also hit a grand slam in the 12-3 win over UAlbany, leads eight Retrievers hitting over .291 with a mark of .352. Junior 1B Ashley Della Guardia leads the squad in home runs (5) and RBI's (16).
  • Wilson is hitting .424 against America East foes.

Scouting Maryland:
  • The Terrapins just took two of three at Iowa over the weekend. They equaled their win total of last year with a 2-0 win in Friday's nightcap, paced by a complete game two-hitter by Courtney Wyche.
  • Maryland's team ERA is 2.58, a tick above the Retrievers. Freshman Keira Bucher leads the country with 11 saves.
  • Amelia Lech has belted a dozen home runs and is ranked 45th nationally in homers per game.
