Baseball Rallies for 9-5 Win Over Bucknell

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Baseball team rallied from a 4-0 first inning deficit to defeat visiting Bucknell, 9-5, on Tuesday at Alumni Field.

Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) and Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) each homered for the Retrievers, while Eddie Sargent (Severn, Md.) bounced back from a tough first inning to go five strong innings and pick up his second victory of the season.

UMBC improved to 14-14 on the season while Bucknell dropped to 15-17.

How it Happened:
  • Bucknell jumped on the board immediately as a grand slam put the Bison up 4-0 four batters into the contest
  • The Retrievers would break through in the third when Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) reached on an error and scored on a Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) one-out double
  • UMBC would again chip into the deficit in the fourth when Trythall was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Krueger then belted a two-run homer to cut the Bucknell lead to 4-3.
  • The Bison would get a run back in the top of the fifth to make it 5-3, but Sargent stranded two in scoring position to keep the Retrievers within reach
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Trythall would blast a three-run homer high off the scoreboard in right center to put UMBC up 6-5
  • Ben Craig (Keezletown, Va.) entered to pitch the sixth for the Retrievers and got a strikeout to strand a runner in scoring position and keep the hosts up
  • Craig worked a perfect top of the seventh, picking up his third and fourth strikeouts in the proccess, to keep UMBC ahead going into the seventh inning stretch
  • Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) got a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh and moved to second on a one-out single from Trythall
  • Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) would drive in Taylor with an RBI double to make it 7-5
  • Krueger then drove in both Trythall and Ryan with a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-5
  • Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) worked two scoreless frames to close out the victory
UMBC will host Georgetown on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
