Molessa Shines, but Baseball Falls Late at (RV) Maryland

College Park, Md. – Reigning America East Rookie of the Week Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) homered and drove in four runs, but host (RV) Maryland broke a late tie with a six-run eighth inning and picked up an 12-6 win over the UMBC baseball team on Tuesday evening.

How It Happened:
  • After starter Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) pitched two scoreless innings, UMBC (4-4) got on the board in the top of third after Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) led off with a walk and then moved to second on a Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.) one out single.
  • A Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) RBI single would score Cilio and make it 1-0 Retrievers.
  • With two outs, and runners at the corners, Easley and Baracani would execute a double steal that scored Baracani and pushed the lead to 2-0.
  • UMBC's bullpen took over to start the third and Maryland (4-7) would eventually take a 6-2 lead.
  • Justin Taylor would get on base in the sixth with a two-out single and would score on Molessa's blast to cut the deficit to 6-4.
  • Rob Dorn (West Grove, Pa.) entered to pitch in the sixth and worked a pair of perfect innings, while striking out two
  • The Retrievers would tie the game in the eighth when Molessa doubled on a full count with two on and two outs.
  • The tie would be short-lived as the hosts would put up six runs in the bottom of the eighth
UMBC will make another local trip this weekend when it plays a three-game series at Mount St. Mary's. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m., before playing a double-header on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
