Coppersmith and Carroll Lead Softball to 6-2 Win Over Bryant to Complete DH Sweep

BALTIMORE -- Freshman Amaya Carroll (Hanover, Md.) blasted her first career homer, a go-ahead two-run shot in the sixth inning, while Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) had a two-RBI single and struck out all six batters she faced, as the UMBC softball team completed a double-header sweep of Bryant with a 6-2 victory.

UMBC trailed, 2-0, in the fifth when Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) tied the game with a two-out, two-run homer to left that scored Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.).

After Coppersmith entered in relief to pitch the top of the sixth and struck out the side, Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) would hit a leadoff double in the bottom half, followed by Carroll smashing a 3-2 pitch for an absolute no-doubt homer to give the Retrievers a 4-2 lead.

With one out, Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) worked a walk and her pinch runner Jaedyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) went to third on a Stott single. Stott then stole second and both runners scored on a Coppersmith full count single.

Coppersmith would once again strike out the side in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.

Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.), who pitched a 14 strikeout no-hitter in game one, was solid in her second start of the day. She allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits and striking out six.

Stott went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the offense, while Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) also had a pair of hits for the Retrievers.

UMBC will host Binghamton for a three-game America East series next weekend.
