Softball Hosts a Pair of Midweek Contests Against Coppin State and Hofstra

The UMBC Softball team gears up for the start of America East play by hosting Coppin State and Hofstra for a pair of midweek single-games at The Diamond.

The Retrievers will host CSU at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, and then take on Hofstra at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

UMBC is coming off a rain-shortened weekend in which they nly got in two of five scheduled contests at Penn State. Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) and Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) each homered over the weekend. 

Scouting Coppin State:
  • The Lady Eagles enter at 2-12 and are coming off being swept at home by Morgan State to open MEAC play last weekend
  • Vanessa Carrizosa leads the pitching staff with a 2-5 record and a 4.63 ERA
  • Seryna Esparza is the leading hitter for CSU, batting .385 with a 1.005 OPS. 
Scouting Hofstra:
  • The Pride enter the week at 8-13 after opening CAA play with a sweep of Stony Brook
  • They have a doubleheader at Virginia on Tuesday afternoon
  • Kasey Collins is batting a team-high .313, while Meghan Giordano has five homers and 10 RBI
  • Nikki Mullin is 3-5 with a 2.98 ERA to lead the rotation  
UMBC will open America East play this weekend at home against Bryant.
