Molessa Drives in Four as Baseball Rallies Past Coppin State

Hanover, Md. -- Freshman Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) hit a homer and drove in four runs, Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) had three hits and Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) threw out the tying run at home in the bottom of the ninth as the visiting UMBC Baseball team rallied for a 6-5 win over Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium on Tuesday.

Sam Daniels (Millersville, Md.) came out of the bullpen and picked up his first career win, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings. Freshman Rob Dorn (West Grove, Pa.) pitched the final two innings to pick up his first career save.

How It Happened
  • Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) was hit by the very first pitch of the game, and Derek Paris (Lanesborough, Mass.) then reached on an error to put two on right away for the Retrievers.
  • Molessa followed by blasting an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for his team-leading fourth homer of the season, and give UMBC (7-9) a 3-0 lead just three batters into the contest
  • Coppin State would slowly chip away at the lead, getting a run in each the first and third innings to cut the deficit to 3-2
  • The Eagles then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead, but Daniels entered with two outs and got a strikeout to strand a runner at second
  • Paris would start the top of the seventh with a walk, and would score all the way from first on a Molessa double.
  • Molessa would then score to tie the game on a Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) pinch-hit single with one out.
  • Coppin State threatened in the bottom of the seventh after a walk and a stolen base, but Daniels got a groundout to end the threat and keep the game tied
  • Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.) would get to second on an error to lead-off the eighth.
  • He then moved to third on a Diaz sacrifice bunt, and then scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch
  • Dorn entered to go for the two inning save and pitched a scoreless eighth, but got into some trouble in the ninth
  • The Eagles got the tying run on right away in the bottom of the ninth with a single to start the inning.
  • The next batter hit a grounder to third and the Retrievers got the lead runner, but couldn't turn two.
  • The Eagles then used a stolen base to move the tying run to second
  • With one out and the runner on second, Coppin State got a single to left, but Easley threw out the runner at the plate to keep for the second out and to keep UMBC up 6-5
  • Dorn would then get a grounder to end the game and pick up the save
  • Eddie Sargent (Severn, Md.) got the start and threw 3.2 solid innings, allowing just two runs and striking out three, before Matt Clarke (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) came in for the next two innings.
UMBC travels to UAlbany for a three-game America East series this weekend.
