Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Edges Host NJIT, 72-69.

Newark, N.J.-- Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) had a team-best 17 points, Ashia McCalla (Greenbelt, Md.) had 13 and KK White (Indianapolis, In.) added 11 as the UMBC Women's Basketball team won a 72-69 thriller at NJIT on Wednesday night

UMBC moved to 11-12 and 8-4 in the America East, while NJIT dropped to 11-12 and 6-5 AE.

Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) added 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds, while Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) added nine points, six rebounds and four blocks.

How It Happened:
  • The teams traded buckets to start the game, but NJIT went on an 8-0 run to take a 16-8 lead midway through the quarter.
  • NJIT stretched the lead to nine, at 19-10, late in the first, but Nia Staples (Cincinnati, Oh.) went nearly the length of the court to beat the buzzer with a layup and cut the deficit to 19-12 after one.
  • The Highlanders jumped out to an early 27-16 lead in the second, but UMBC went on a 14-2 run capped by a Drake bucket to take a 30-29 lead with 3:51 left.
  • The teams traded buckets until White and Bell hit back-to-back shots to give UMBC a 36-33 lead, but the hosts would score two late buckets, including a buzzer-beater to take a 37-36 lead into the half.
  • Dixon led the way in the first half with 10 points, while Bell had eight points and Drake added four points and six rebounds
  • NJIT pushed the lead to 47-41 midway through the third, but Dixon responded with a three-point play to cut the deficit back to three at the media timeout.
  • McCalla then hit a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to one, and the teams would then trade buckets before White would get a steal and layup to give the Retrievers a 50-49 lead with under 90 seconds to go.
  • McCalla would make it 52-49, and then after an NJIT layup, White would beat the buzzer on an offensive putback to give the visitors a 54-51 lead heading into the final frame.
  • Drake and McCalla would hit back-to-back jumpers early in the fourth to extend the lead to 58-51 and force the hosts to call timeout
  • White would hit a jumper out of the timeout to make it a 60-51 lead, and the teams would trade baskets after that to make it 62-53
  • The Highlanders would go on a 7-1 run to cut the lead to three, but Drake came down with an offensive board and put back to push the lead back to 65-60 with under three minutes left, and would then answer an NJIT jumper with one of her own moments later.
  • The hosts would make one final push down the stretch, but the Retrievers would hit their free throws and a desperation three from NJIT rimmed out at the buzzer.
UMBC continues its road trip at Bryant on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and fans can catch the action on ESPN3.
