UMass Lowell Uses Late Rally to Defeat Women's Basketball, 67-64

Lowell, Mass. – Host UMass Lowell used a late run to rally past the UMBC Women's Basketball team, 67-64, on Wednesday night.

UMBC concludes the regular season with a 13-14 record and went 10-6 in America East play

How it Happened:
  • UMBC jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead midway through the first, thanks to six points and two rebounds from Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.)
  • The lead grew to as much as seven, but UMass Lowell continued to fight back as the Retrievers lead was only 17-14 after the first quarter.
  • UMBC shot 50% in the first quarter (7-of-14), but was undone by five turnovers.
  • After the hosts cut the deficit to one, the Retrievers scored six straight, highlighted by back-to-back steals from Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) and Bell that led to two easy buckets and a seven point lead.
  • The River Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to take a 26-23 lead with 2:30 left in the half
  • McCalla ended the 5:40 scoreless streak with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one
  • Those free throws kick-started a 7-0 run  that gave UMBC a 30-26 lead at the half
  • Bell finished the first half with eight points and seven rebounds, while Dixon had four points and four assists
  • The third quarter was more of the same, as the teams traded runs throughout the quarter, and UMBC maintained its four point lead (44-40) going into the fourth
  • The teams again trade baskets as UMBC would lead 50-47 after splitting a pair of free throws with 5:47 left
  • The River Hawks would hit back-to-back threes to take a 53-50 lead, but the Retrievers immediately tied it back up with a three from KK White (Indianapolis, In.)
  • Lowell would then hit three straight shots and take a game-best six point lead.
  • The Retrievers fought back, as White and McCalla each hit late threes to keep it a one possession game, but the River Hawks would hit their free throws and White's potential game tying three at the buzzer missed
  • UML would hit 4-of-5 from three and 7-of-11 in the fourth to come away with the victory.
Bell finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while White tallied a team-high 18 points.

UMBC will be either the No.3 or No.4 seed and return home to host an America East Quarterfinal on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Opponent will be determined this weekend
