Molessa Homers, Drives in Six, in Collegiate Debut

Newark, Del. – Freshman Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) homered in his first career at-bat, drove in six runs and finished a single shy of the cycle, but the UMBC Baseball team dropped its season-opener at Delaware, 22-11, on Tuesday afternoon.

His three-run homer put UMBC (0-1) up 3-0 in the second. Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) and Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) each had an RBI single later in the inning to make it a 5-0 Retriever lead.

Delaware (1-3) would score the next seven runs to go up 7-5 heading into the fourth. Swenda would cut the deficit to 7-6 when he beat out an infield single to score Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) with two outs in the fourth, but the Blue Hens responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to blow the game open.

UMBC would rally again in the sixth as Krueger drove in Diaz with an RBI single, and Molessa would clear the bases with a two-out, three-run, triple to cut the hosts lead to 17-10. Once again, however, Delaware would answer in the bottom half of the inning, putting up four runs of their own.

Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) would get a pinch-hit double to leadoff the ninth and would eventually score on a Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) sacrifice fly.

Freshman Joshua Rivera (Leesburg, Va.) struck out the first two batters he faced in his college career en route to a perfect inning of work.

The Retrievers head south for a three game weekend series this weekend at perennial CAA power The College of Charleston. Friday and Saturday both have 4 p.m. starts, while the series finale on Sunday begins at 1 p.m. All the action can be watched on FloSports ($).
