Softball Drops Pair to Open Season

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Softball team dropped a pair of games to open the season on Saturday at The Diamond. Visitng Kent State (2-5) took a 3-1 decision in game one, and Niagara (1-1) took a wild 12-10, 10 inning, decision in game two.

GAME 1
  • A pair of errors allowed a run to score in the top of the first. 
  • UMBC answered back in the bottom half when Catelyn Thrush (Perkasie, Pa.) walked, stole second and would score after Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) singled and got caught in a rundown. 
  • KSU would add runs on a solo homer in the third and a two-out single in the fifth.
  • Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) had a pair of hits to lead the Retrievers, while
  • Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) took the loss, striking out five in five innings.
  • Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out a pair in two scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen.

Game 2
 
  • In a back and forth contest against Niagara, the Retrievers struck first in the bottom of the first. 
  • After Keating led off the game with a double, Della Guardia eventually brought her home on a sac fly. 
  • UMBC then went up 2-0 an inning later after Zoe Russell (Roxboro, N.C.) reached base on an error and was brought home on a RBI groundout by Abby Brenowitz (Baltimore, Md.).
  • Niagara took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third after the visitors capitalized on unearned runs.
  • UMBC trimmed the deficit back to one at 4-3 in the bottom of the third after Della Guardia doubled and was brought home on a groundout.
  • The visitors added a pair of runs to go up 6-3 in the top of the fourth after a walk and a single came around to score.
  • The Retrievers continued to fight back, tacking on a run in the bottom of the inning after Coppersmith reached on an error and scored a few batters later from a groundout by Brenowitz.
  • UMBC tied the game up at six in the bottom of the fifth after Della Guardia singled and came home on an RBI single by Russell. The Retrievers then took a 8-6 lead after on a pair of unearned runs. 
  • Niagara tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knot the game up at eight.
  • The visitors took the lead at 9-8 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single, but the Retrievers immediately knotted things up after Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md.) was placed on second to start the bottom half of the inning and was brought home on a RBI bunt single by Coppersmith.
  • Niagara didn't look back, adding three runs in the top of the 10th to take a 12-9 advantage, and ultimately held on for the win.
  • Keating, Della Guardia and Coppersmith each tallied two hits in the game to lead the Retrievers. 
  • Keating also scored three runs, while Coppersmith and Brenowitz each had two RBIs in the defeat.

UMBC will face Niagara and Kent State again tomorrow at 1:30 and 4
