Women's Lacrosse Set for Home-Opener Against American On Saturday

FAST START
- UMBC opened the 2023 campaign with road victories at George Washington and Bucknell last week.
- Claire Bockstie, Lauren Cremen and Megan Halczuk combined for 13 goals, and each recorded a hat-trick, as the Retrievers cruised to a 19-10 win at George Washington last Saturday. Isabella Fontana collected 13 saves in net.
- Bockstie and Katana Nelson tallied three goals apiece to help lead the Retrievers to a 12-10 victory at Bucknell on Wednesday evening. Kolby Weedon added two goals and one assist in a balanced Retriever attack.
 
THE CORE RETURNS
- UMBC is expected to have a high-powered offense as three of last season's top-ten returning America East scorers return to the fold.
- Senior Claire Bockstie, a First Team America East All-Conference attacker, led the circuit with 3.71 goals per game and was second with 4.76 points per game.
- Junior attacker Dymin Gerow finished sixth with 2.71 goals per game while America East All-Conference Second Team.
- Sophomore attacker Kolby Weedon finished 9th (2.65 goals per game). Weedon was also named the Rookie of the Year in the conference.
- Senior America East All-Conference Second Team midfielder Megan Halczuk paced the conference in draw controls per game (6.53) and was third in caused turnovers per game (1.35).
- Junior goalkeeper Isabella Fontana was second in the conference with a .525 save percentage and was fourth in goals against (9.90 pg.).
 
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
- American dropped an 18-5 decision against the Georgetown Hoyas in their season-opener last Saturday.
-Maddy Spratt led AU with two goals and an assist.
- Hannah Spease paced the Eagles with seven draw controls.
-Lexi Rakis made 10 saves in net.
- The Eagles finished 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the Patriot League in 2022.
- American returns seven starters, including Spratt, who scored 27 goals and added 28 assists in 2022.
 
SERIES HISTORY
- UMBC is 21-2 all-time against American.
- Three of the last four contests have been decided by two goals or less.
- UMBC defeated the Eagles, 17-9, in Washington D.C. last season. Bockstie scored six goals and Gerow hit the target four times to lead the Retrievers' attack.
-American's last win against the Retrievers was a 15-14 overtime decision at UMBC Stadium in 2003.
