Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball Against First Place UAlbany

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Women's Basketball team's late rally fell short as they dropped a 74-67 contest to first-place UAlbany on Wednesday night at The Peake.

UMBC fell to 12-13 and 9-5 in the America East, while UAlbany improved to 18-10 and 12-2.

How It Happened:
  • The teams alternated baskets to start as a KK White (Indianapolis, In.) three-pointer just over four minutes in gave the hosts an 8-7 lead.
  • Ashia McCalla (Greenbelt, Md.) would add a layup to make it 10-7 halfway through the frame.
  • The teams traded baskets after that, until White scored five-straight to end the quarter as UMBC led 18-13 after one.
  • The Great Danes had a massive second quarter as they held the Retrievers without a basket for nearly six minutes to open the second as they went on a 6-1 run to tie it up, before a Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.)  layup gave UMBC a 21-19 lead
  • UAlbany responded with nine straight to take a 28-21 lead into the half, outscoring the hosts 15-3 in the frame.
  • White paced UMBC in the first half with eight points, while Bell had four points and four rebounds.
  • The run continued into the third as an early three made it 12 straight points for UAlbany, until a Bell steal and layup ended the run and cut the deficit to 31-23.
  • Drake then hit a jumper and White drained another three to make it 31-28 and force a Great Dane timeout
  • Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) continued the run with a pair of free throws to make it 31-30
  • After the Great Danes hit a layup to end the run, McCalla answered right back with a floater and Nia Staples (Cincinnati, Oh.) hit a free throw to tie the game at 33
  • But UAlbany would respond by ripping off eight straight to take a 41-33 advantage
  • After a Paloma Iradier (Santander, Spain) layup, the Great Danes hit three free throws to take a 44-35 lead into the final quarter.
  • UMBC scored the first four points of the final quarter on four free throws, followed by a McCalla fastbreak layup to make it 44-41
  • The visitors got a layup but McCalla scored three straight to cut the deficit to two, but UAlbany answered with a layup.
  • Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) responded with a three to trim the lead to 48-47, but the Great Danes answered with a three of their own moments later.
  • UAlbany would go on a run and eventually a Bell putback layup with 2:23 left cut the deficit to 62-56.
  • Dixon hit a three and was fouled with 1:01 left, as he four-point plate cut the deficit to 67-63.
  • The Great Danes, who hit seven of their final eight shot attempts, would make their free throws down the stretch to close out the game
  • Dixon finished 17 points, White had 16, McCalla had 14 and Bell added 10.
The Retrievers will host New Hampshire for Senior Day on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
