Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Run Pushes Binghamton Past Women's Basketball

Vestal, N.Y. Ashia McCalla (Greenbelt, Md.) scored 17 points, Nia Staples (Cincinnati, Oh.) tallied 12 and Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif) had 10 points, 10 rebounds and a season-high five blocks, but host Binghamton went on a 20-6 run in the final four minutes to defeat the UMBC Women's Basketball team, 80-70, on Wednesday night.

Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) added 11 points, and KK White (Indianapolis, In.) added 10 as the Retrievers dropped to 9-12 overall and 6-4 in the America East.

How it Happened:
  • UMBC jumped out to an early 13-6 lead, but Binghamton (12-11,5-5 AE) outscored the Retrievers 13-2 in the final 5:30 of the quarter to take a 19-15 lead into the second.
  • Both teams struggled from the floor to start the second frame, but a Drake three with just over six minutes left cut the Bearcat lead to 23-22.
  • BU quickly stretched the lead back out to five, at 27-22, but UMBC went on a big 10-0 run over the next 4:24.
  • First Staples made a jumper and followed it up with a layup moments later to cut the lead to 27-26
  • McCalla made a layup and got fouled to put the Retrievers up 28-27 with 2:46 left.
  • A pair of free throws and a Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.)  layup gave UMBC a 32-27 lead with just over a minute left.
  • The Bearcats would end the quarter on a 4-0 run to send the game into the half with UMBC up 32-31.
  • The teams struggled from distance in the first half, going a combined 2-16 from the floor, but the Retrievers shot 13-25 from two in the half.
  • The teams traded baskets to start the third, but a layup and back-to-back threes from Binghamton put the hosts up 44-40 midway through the frame
  • The Bearcat lead grew to 49-42, before a McCalla three and a White layup cut the deficit to 49-47 with 2:15 to go
  • After the hosts pushed the lead back to four, Staples hit a pair of jumpers to tie it up at 51 with 43 seconds left. BU would split a pair of the late free throws to take a 52-51 lead into the final quarter
  • Bell hit a quick layup to give UMBC a 53-52 lead right off the bat in the fourth, but Binghamton answered moments later with a layup of their own to reclaim the lead, and would push the lead to 57-53 before McCalla hit another three to make it 57-56
  • After BU made it 59-56, McCalla and Staples each hit shots to give the Retrievers the lead back, at 60-59, with 5:23 left
  • A Drake steal and layup put UMBC up 64-60 with just over four minutes left, but BU would score 11 points on their next four possessions over a two minute stretch to go up 71-66 with just under two minutes left.
  • The Bearcats would hit their free throws from that point on to ice the game
