Khydarius Smith combined for 43 points on 17-of-28 shooting but the Retrievers dropped a 103-81 decision against the Iowa Hawkeyes, Wednesday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Brown buried a career-high five three-point field goals, including his first five attempts, and was 9-of-14 from the floor on the evening, while Smith converted 8-of-14 attempts in the contest. Graduate forward
Max Lorca-Lloyd added a game-high three blocks and junior guard
Marcus Banks Jr. contributed eight points, a team-best five boards and three assists.

UMBC, who splashed a season-high 13 triples in the contest and finished at 52 percent from long-distance, dropped their fourth straight game and are now 5-9 on the season.

Iowa (7-5, 0-2 Big Ten) outscored the Retrievers by a 66-34 margin in the paint and registered 33 assists while committing just four turnovers.

Guard Tony Perkins led a balanced Hawkeye attack with 23 points and added seven assists, six caroms and four steals. Guard Payton Sandfort (18 points, 10 boards), forward Ben Krikke (17 points, 12 rebounds) and guard Brock Harding (12 assists, 10 points) all recorded double-doubles.

UMBC got off to a nice start as they led 12-8 after a trey from Brown at the 16:32 mark. The Dawgs hit four of their first five long-distance attempts of the night.

The hosts took their first lead of the game, 14-12, on a trifecta by Sandfort with 15:20 left, however, the Retrievers went on a 14-7 burst to take their largest lead of the game at 26-21 with eight minutes left before intermission. Lorca-Lloyd ignited the run with a jam after taking a feed from freshman guard
Ace Valentine and Smith scored seven points during the stretch.

The Hawkeyes responded with a 12-5 spurt to take the lead for good, 33-31, with 4:54 left in the stanza. The hosts continued to build their lead as they outscored UMBC by a 17-3 margin to close out the half.

Leading 50-36 at the break, Iowa put the game away early in the second half as they led 73-45 with 12:04 left in the contest, their largest advantage of the night.

UMBC was outrebounded by a 47-36 margin while the hosts outscored the Retrievers by a 28-6 margin in fast break points.

The Retrievers shot a solid 46.4 percent overall as they made 32-of-69 attempts but committed 15 turnovers which led to 23 points for the Hawkeyes.
