Women's Basketball Heads to American for Wednesday Matinee

The UMBC Women's Basketball team returns from an 11-day break for final exams with a 12:30 p.m. game at American on Wednesday.

Last time out, Trinity Palacio filled the stat sheet with five points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists, but the Retrievers fell, 65-42, on 12/9 at Morgan State. 

Jaliena Sanchez finished with a team-best 14 points, while Anna Blount tallied 12 points and seven rebounds. Jaden Walker grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Walker was coming off a career performance in the previous contest when she had a double-double as she finished with a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds, with three assists, two steals and a block. 

In that game against Bryant & Stratton, four other Retrievers tallied double-digit points as Blount and Jordon Lewis each had 14 points, while Sanchez had 12 and Paloma Iradier added 10.

Scouting American:
  • Visiting Towson was able to pull away late in the fourth quarter for a 68-60 victory over host American on 12/10.
  • Graduate student Lauren Stack lead the Eagles in scoring with 13 points, going 4-from-5 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the charity stripe. She also led the team in rebounding, picking up seven boards.
  • Stack also found herself in foul trouble in the final quarter of the game but still stayed out on the court for a total of 33 minutes.
  • Senior Kayla Henning went 5-for-7 from the field picking up 12 points to help the Eagles on offense.
  • Turnover and free-throws proved costly in the match up, with the Eagles turning the ball over 21 times to Towson. While only going 50% from behind the line, going 7-for-14, while Towson went 85% and grabbed 17 points from behind the stripe.
All-Time Series:
  • American leads the series, 15-6, and has won the previous five match-ups
  • Last season, American's Emily Johns hit a 3-pointer with 8.1 seconds remaining to give the visiting Eagles a 70-68 victory over the host Retrievers 
  • UMBC graduate student guard Nia Staples produced a brilliant game, scoring a career high 24 points in defeat.
  • The game ended with two major scoring runs. Trailing 61-57, Staples hit three treys in 54 seconds and Kiara Bell added a bucket as part of an 11-0 surge which gave the hosts a 68-61 lead at the 2:38 mark.
  • But American finished the game on a 9-0 run.
