Women's Basketball Takes CAA Favorite Towson to the Wire

Towson, Md – Jordon Lewis scored a career-high 24 points in her UMBC debut, and sophomore Carmen Yánez added a career-best 12 points, but CAA favorite Towson scored the final four points of the game to defeat visiting UMBC, 76-72 on Monday night at TU Arena.

How it Happened:
  • The teams were tight to start the game, but back-to-back layups from Laycee Drake and Anna Blount gave the Retrievers an 11-7 lead.
  • Lewis would hit a late three as UMBC took a 16-15 lead into the second quarter
  • Towson started to find its rhythm offensively in the second, but the Retrievers hung tight thanks to four points from Yanez and a late three from Donahue kept UMBC within 37-31 at the half.
  • UMBC shot 10-19 (53%) from the floor and 3-4 from three (75%) in the first half, but had 14 turnovers and six missed free throws
  • Blount made a jumper and Lewis hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 37-35 90 seconds into the half. 
  • Yanez would hit a three to tie it at 38, but Towson hit back-to-back threes to push the lead back to six
  • UMBC would cut an eight point deficit to three on a Lewis fastbreak layup, but Towson again responded with the next four
  • Jaliena Sanchez would drain a mid-range jumper to beat the third quarter buzzer and send the Retrievers into the fourth only down 54-49
  • Anne Adewumi made the first bucket of her career seconds into the quarter and Blount followed with one of her own to cut TU lead to 54-53
  • UMBC had the ball with a chance for the lead, but a turnover was followed by a Towson three and a layup to make it a six point game
  • Lewis hit a layup to bring UMBC back within three, 64-61, with 4:33 to go
  • Yanez hit a three to cut the Towson lead to 69-68 with just under two minutes left
  • Paloma Iradier would hit two free throws to give UMBC a brief lead, but TU answered with a three to go up two.
  • Blount hit a layup to tie it back up before TU responded with a floater to go back up two.
  • A missed three from UMBC was followed by a TU layup to make it 76-72 with 13 seconds left, and that's how it would end.

UMBC opens the home schedule on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Gettysburg
