Men's Hoops Set to Host Penn State York on Tuesday Evening

  • The host UMBC Retrievers nearly recovered from a 17-point first half deficit but fell to the Marist Red Foxes, 65-59, in their home opener at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Saturday afternoon.
  • Sophomore guard Dion Brown scored a game-high 23 points, including 19 in the second half, while junior guard Marcus Banks Jr. (team-high nine rebounds) was also in double-figures with 14 points.
  • Brown's 28 points at Louisville were the most scored by a Retriever on opening night since Nov. 9, 2012 (Ryan Cook, 28 pts at UPenn).
  • Brown is averaging 25.5 ppg. and 5.5 rpg. while shooting 53 percent from the floor after the first two contests. He was named the America East Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday.
  • UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 136-88 (.614) over the past seven seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program high.
  • The Retrievers were picked sixth in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • UMBC had won seven straight home openers before Saturday's defeat.
  • Tonight's tilt is the second game of a four-game home stretch before the Retrievers make the trip down to Maryland on Nov. 21.
  • The Retrievers have 11 new faces on the roster this season, which includes five freshmen.
  • Brown is UMBC's leading returning scorer at 7.7 points per game.
  • Graduate student forward Max Lorca-Lloyd led UPenn with 34 blocks last season and recorded three swats at Louisville.

  • UMBC has won all three meetings against Penn State York. 
  • The Retrievers defeated the Nittany Lions last season in their home opener by a 92-65 count. Yaw Obeng-Mensah scored 19 points and grabbed ten boards to lead the Retrievers. Deriq Brown scored a game-high 20 points for Penn State York.
  • UMBC won by a score of 85-47 on Nov. 15, 2021 and also bested the Nittany Lions by an 89-57 margin on Dec. 30, 2019.
