BALTIMORE -- Nearly 1,000 fans who packed The Peake for Maui Wildfire Awareness Night saw the UMBC Volleyball team earn at least a share of the America East regular season championship with a sweep of visiting NJIT (25-7, 25-23, 25-19) on Friday night.
UMBC improved to 14-7 overall and 7-2 in the America East and, as the No.1 seed, earned the right to host the America East Tournament that begins next Friday.
The night was all about Hawai'i native
Aysia Miller, who was the driving force behind the night's initiative. Miller finished with 16 assists, four kills, three digs, three aces and a block.
Mia Bilusic led the offense with a game-best 15 kills on .414 hitting and eight digs.
Julija Grubisic Cabo had a match-high 13 digs to with eight kills, four aces and two blocks.
Hannah Howard had 12 digs, while
Serin Maden added 18 assists and nine digs.
Michela De Marzi continued her strong play in the middle, finishing with six kills on .600 hitting and no errors. Fellow middle
Mila Ilieva had four kills and a match-best five blocks.
Kamani Conteh,
Emily Ferketic,
Weronika Wrzesinska,
Laila Wooldridge and
Helen Frankovich all added kills for the Retrievers, while
Emily Genau added an ace, an assist and a dig.
UMBC will close out the regular season on Sunday by hosting UAlbany. First serve is set for 1 p.m. and a pregame senior ceremony will begin at 12:50 p.m.
