Women's Swimming & Diving Welcomes La Salle in Home Opener

The Retrievers celebrate Parents' Weekend as the Explorers provide a stern test.

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving squads are set to open the home season this Saturday, Oct. 7 when they host La Salle on Parent's Weekend. The meet gets underway at noon. Live results will be available on the Meet Mobile app. 

FOR OPENERS: UMBC The UMBC women's swimming and diving squad went stroke-for-stroke versus host American University and edged the Eagles, 154.5-145.5 to open the 2023-24 season on a high note.

Senior Nyah Stahl led a balanced effort, winning both the 200 backstroke and 200 IM.

Two newcomers to Retriever Diving, junior Joella Mills and freshman Ember Stennett swept the boards for for the Retrievers. Mills took the 1-meter event with 229.80 points, while Stennett captured 3-meter board at 222.90 points. In their UMBC debuts, juniors Bruna de Padua and Elze Bielskute earned golds in the 1000 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke events respectively.  
Veterans Makaela Hill (50 free), Rola Hussein (100 backstroke) and Telma Maltesjö (200 breaststroke) also earned golds for the black and gold.

CAPTAINS: Head Coach Matt Donovan has announced that seniors Shea Buirski (Williamsburg, Va.), Roaa Farag (Cairo, Egypt) and Nyah Stahl (Mount Wolf, Pa.) have been named team captains for the 2023-24 women's swimming and diving program.

VERSUS LA SALLE; This will be UMBC's first meet versus La Salle since 2012 and just the second meeting overall. The Retrievers won that meet, 170-130.

THE EXPLORERS: La Salle opens their season on Friday at Towson. Last season, they tied a strong Delaware squad, 149.5-all.    

2023-24 AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS: The post-season gets underway on February 14-17 when the men hope to defend their title and the women strive to re-capture the crown at the America East Swimming & Diving Championships. The championships move south to Lexington, Va. in 2024 as associate league member VMI hosts at the one-year old VMI Aquatic Center.

NEXT MEET: UMBC will welcome back alumni for Homecoming 2023 and compete in a Black & Gold Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Retrievers host Navy the following Friday, Oct. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
