BREAKING NEWS:
Â
- UMBC (5-2-3, 1-0-1 AE) remained undefeated in America East Conference play as the Retrievers held high-powered Bryant off the scoreboard in a 0-0 draw on Saturday.
- The scoreless draw is UMBC's first since March of 2021 when they battled Stony Brook for 110 minutes with no goals. It was the first time in a span of ten home matches that the Retrievers failed to dent the net.
- More recently, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, UMBC engaged in a wild 4-4 draw versus Navy. The Retrievers appeared down and out as they allowed four goals in the first 67 minutes versus Navy and trailed, 4-1in the 67'.  But spearheaded by a two-goal, one-assist effort by senior forward Alek Wroblewski, the Retrievers scored three goals in a span of 6:06 to forge a 4-4 tie with the Midshipmen before 1,356 at Retriever Soccer Park.
- Some leftovers from Tuesday…
- The 4-4 draw is the first eight-goal result in UMBC's NCAA Division I (1986) history. Â
- The comeback from three goals down to earn a result is also a first in UMBC's 38 years of Division I competition.
- The result is the third consecutive draw versus Navy, the first time UMBC has battled the same foe to a draw in back-to-back-to-back meetings. Â
- The America East is currently ranked 3rd in RPI among all conferences and is one of three conferences (ACC & Pac-12) with four teams ranked in the top 40: UVM (11), Bryant (32), UMBC (36), UNH (39). The league is also one of four conferences (ACC, BIG 10, Pac-12) to have at least 80% of its teams ranked in the RPI top 120 (7 of 8).
- UMBC was ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Regional poll as of Oct. 3. Along with the Retrievers, Vermont (1), UNH (2), and Bryant (3) comprised the top four teams in the poll. Cornell, a team which UMBC edged, 2-1, on Sept. 16, was ranked No. 5 in the region.
- Senior forward Taylor Calheira leads the team with eight goals and two assists through ten games. Calheira's game-tying goal versus Navy was the 30th of his career and elevates him into a tie for tenth place on UMBC's all-time goal scoring list.
- He is three goals clear of five other players for the top spot in America East. Calheira is tied for eighth in the country in goal scoring and tied for 14th in goals per contest (0.80) as of the last statistical report on October 3. Â He needs three more points to move into UMBC's top ten on that all-time top ten list.
- Sophomore Emigdio Tormo Lopez (1.56 GAA) has started the last five games for UMBC and recorded his second shutout versus Bryant. Senior Jay Gillespie entered the game versus Navy at halftime, allowed one goal and earned the draw to his record.
A GLANCE AT THE RIVER HAWKS Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
- UMass Lowell (2-5-2, 0-2-0 AE) will be playing its first home match since Sept. 12 and first home America East contest versus the Retrievers. They won the first match of their four-game road swing, routing Central Connecticut State, 5-0, but have dropped three in a row, including Tuesday's 5-4 setback at Holy Cross.Â
- The River Hawks gave No. 14 Vermont quite a battle in Burlington on Sept. 30, falling 2-1.
- UML scored four first half goals at Holy Cross and led, 4-2, at halftime, but the hosts scored three second half goals to prevail. Michael Oliveri, Jr. scored a goal and added an assist for the River Hawks.
- UML is averaging 2.11 goals per game and allowing 2.22 in 2023. Giullermo Frances Poquet and Daniele Mastroianni each have scored four goals to led the potent offense.
Â
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
- UMBC leads the all-time series, 5-4-0, but have lost the last three matches in Lowell. The last Retrieve win occurred in 2015.
- In last year's meeting at Retriever Soccer Park, the Retrievers posted a 5-1 victory. Taylor Calheira scored twice and Jordan Ehart contributed his lone career goal in the triumph.
- UML defeated UMBC, 2-1, in the last meeting in Lowell on Sept. 25, 2021.
