Miller's Triple-Double Leads Volleyball to Sweep in Battle for First

BALTIMORE -- Aysia Miller picked up her second triple-double of the season and Hannah Howard racked up 25 digs as the UMBC Volleyball team swept visiting Binghamton (29-27, 25-16, 25-20) on Thursday night at The Peake in a battle for first place in the America East.

UMBC (10-6. 4-1 AE) handed Binghamton (11-9, 4-1 AE) its first conference loss of the season and its first America East regular season sweep since 11/12/21.

Miller was outstanding in all facets for the Retrievers, finishing with 11 kills (.476 hitting), 21 assists and 11 digs

Kamani Conteh led all players with 14 kills (.294 hitting) and added four blocks. Mia Bilsuic had 10 kills, eight digs and tied her career-high with six aces. 

Julija Grubisic Cabo had nine kills and 11 digs, while Mila Ilieva had six kills and five blocks. 

How it Happened:
  • The first set was a tight affair that featured 17 lead changes and seven ties.
  • Binghamton had set point at 24-21, but UMBC would score three straight after a kill by Miller and back-to-back kills from Bilusic.
  • The Bearcats would get set points at 25-24 and 26-25, but another Bilusic kill and an attack error kept the match going
  • UMBC would get set point at 27-26, but BU fought it off before an attack error and a kill by Conteh gave the Retrievers the set
  • Binghamton started off the set on fire, jumping out to a 9-3 lead, but UMBC answered with a huge run to eventually take a 14-12 lead.
  • The Bearcats tied the set at 16, but UMBC would go on a 9-0 run, featuring four aces from Bilusic, to take the set and go up 2-0
  • The third set was the inverse of the second as the Retrievers jumped out to an early 7-1 lead
  • The lead stretched to 14-6 before BU went on a run and trimmed the deficit to 16-13, but UMBC responded with a 4-0 run to pull away for good
  • Miller saved her best for last as she had six kills on .556 hitting and six assists in the final set
The Retrievers will have a short rest as they welcome Bryant to The Peake on Sunday at 1 p.m.
