BALTIMORE – Defending America East champion No. 24 New Hampshire broke open a tight affair by scoring three times in five minutes late in the second half and defeated UMBC, 4-1, in slick conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Wildcats improve to 7-1-4 overall and 1-0-3 in America East, but still trail UMBC (6-3-3, 2-1-1) through four league games.
UMBC senior forward
Taylor Calheira scored his tenth goal of the season for UMBC, the Retrievers' first goal against the experience Wildcats since 2017. That goal, a header off a corner by
Jago Lott in the 62' equalized the game at 1-1 and occurred less than two minutes after UNH opened the scoring.
But defensive miscues cost the Retrievers late in the game and UNH took advantage. The visitors scored the eventual game-winner in the 75', and tallied again in the 77' and 80'.
Both goalkeepers were outstanding for the majority of the night. UMBC sophomore
Emigdio Tormo Lopez made seven saves, including a brilliant tandem in the 55' and 58'. UNH's Joseba Incera stopped a drive header for the corner of the net by Calheira in the 15' and finished with four saves.
Calheira has now reached the 10-goal plateau in back-to-back seasons and his 32nd career strike moves him into eighth place on the school's all-time list.
UMBC travels to Burlington to face another nationally-ranked foe, Vermont, on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m.
